BANGALORE: At a time when fear of job losses rules the mind of many, IT major Wipro on Wednesday said it had made 8,000 campus offers this fiscal.

Allaying fears that global meltdown might have an impact on new recruits’ joining the company, Wipro’s Corporate Vice-President, Human Resources, Pratik Kumar said there had been no delay in new recruits joining the company.

In normal routine students were not absorbed at one-go but were taken in, spread over various quarters of the fiscal year, he said.

Those who received offers this year are expected to join the firm, spread over various quarters next fiscal.

Nearly 14,000 offers were made last fiscal and the students are expected to join by end of this fiscal.

He said Wipro had already dispatched learning kits containing CDs, and content material on the organisation to those who were awaiting their joining date.

“We hope that students would go through these and thereby save around two weeks on training when they join us. The normal training duration was 12 weeks”, he said.

On the number of lateral hiring the firm was looking at, Kumar said lateral hiring would be “in line with demand”. “Lateral is going to be selective” and would depend on skill shortage, he said.

The net staff addition for the quarter ended September 30, 2008 was 1,877 with 352 for IT services, 967 for BPO and 558 for India and Middle East IT services.

He also added that the voluntary attrition rate had dropped to 11 per cent in second quarter of this fiscal from 14.7 per cent in Q1 and from 17 per cent in Q2 last fiscal.

Offshore employees had seen a pay hike of seven to 8 per cent in the second quarter of this fiscal, he said. Source The Economic Times
